Multi-Interface 8 Way relay BV4627-B

**** Product discontinued - Replaced with BV4531 (serial) or BV4532 (I2C) ****

This device contains 8 single pole double throw (SPDT) relays that can be operated in two ways. The actual attached relays are capable of switching up to 10A @24V DC and 10A @250V AC. Each relay can be instantly switched on or off or commanded to switch at a set time of up to 1.3 hours (I2C only).

  • Normally open 10A @ 250V
  • AC Normally Closed 6A @ 250V AC
  • 10A 24V DC

There are two versions of this board. The full version and a cut down version that does not have the IR and USB interface. This data sheet describes the full version, if you have the cut down version then ignore the IR and USB sections.

*This item is for the CUT DOWN version without USB and IR interface and so has TWO interface options

The following describes each of the interfaces that are available. The interfaces are mutually exclusive, that is only one interface can be used at a time. The selection of the interface is automatic and depends on what is connected to the device.

The Binary Interface

This is intended for simple interfacing to electronic equipment that could be discrete logic or a microcontroller. Three lines select the relay and one line is used as a clock to switch the relay on or off. A short clock pulse switches the selected relay off and a long clock pulse switches it on.

The I2C Interface

This is designed for connection to a microcontroller or similar device. The device has an address of 0x64 but that can be changed in software by the user. The interface works by issuing commands to the device to switch the relays on and off. A particular feature of this interface is that the switching (on or off) can be delayed for up to about an hour. This can be useful for reducing the resources required on the host system or even switching the host off altogether after a certain period.

The USB Interface - Full version only

This interface is designed for connection to a PC. It uses the FTDI chip to create a virtual COM port which had drivers available for most operating systems. Once the COM port is established the communication and operation is carried out by simple text commands. It is very simple to create a VB or other program to send text commands to operate the relays. This also has timed switching so it would even be possible to send a timed off command to the host PC, have the PC carry out and orderly shout down and the relay could completely power off the PC after a minute or so.

The IR Interface - Full Version only

The device has an Infra Red receiver that is tuned to the average remote control (36KHz). The USB interface is used to set up the control and the user selects the keys that will operate the required relay. The keys can select a toggle action (press once for on and once for off) or a momentary action where the relay is on whilst the key is pressed. This could be mapped to the volume control for example and one relay would come on at +V and the other relay would come on at -V - possibly opening and closing curtains for example.

The interface can be set up for a variety of remote handsets and the actual information received does not have to be exact just as long as a different value is received for a different remote key press. Once set up the device will operate independently, all it needs is a 5V power supply.
